The Second International Symposium on Pressure Hydrometallurgy is organized by the Hydrometallurgy Section of the Metallurgy and Materials Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and constitutes its 42nd Annual Hydrometallurgy Meeting. A primary goal of these meetings is to bring together scientists and engineers representing metal producers, equipment suppliers, engineering firms, test laboratories and academia from around the world to share knowledge and exchange ideas. Pressure Hydrometallurgy 2012 builds on the foundations established by the first Pressure Hydrometallurgy conference, held in Banff in 2004.
Since the mid-1980s, we have seen a significant and accelerating number of advancements in technology which continue to enhance our quality of life. These technologies, be they in the areas of renewable energy production, energy storage or demand-side energy efficiency, hybrid vehicles, tablet computers, smartphones, digital displays or lasers all rely on materials made possible by the rare earth elements (commonly referred to as “rare earths”). Consumer and policy-driven demand for these advanced technology products has strained the supply of available rare earths. The rare earth supply chain, from mine to final product, is complex and relatively long, and faces a number of unique challenges particularly as it is in its relatively early stages of development. It is therefore critically important to conduct research on all steps of the supply chain, from geology, extraction, separation and refining, to final product design, and lifecycle management and recycling. Also important is an understanding of the economic and environmental issues related to meeting the demand for rare earth based materials. This inaugural Rare Earths Symposium at the Conference of Metallurgists aims to provide a collaborative forum to discuss these critical and timely issues.
The present symposium, 7th in the series, is dedicated to honor Professor James A. Finch of McGill University for his outstanding contributions over almost 40 years in several areas of mineral processing research. The papers presented in the volume, to a large extent, reflect Jim's interests and are a tribute to his accomplishments and leadership. Most papers are on flotation, including, chemistry, hydrodynamics and machine design, in each one of which Jim's contributions have been outstanding and internationally recognized. There is also a section of papers in other areas of mineral processing, such as gravity separation, sedimentation and sulphide minerals self-heating. Jim has done significant work in some of these areas as well and the non-flotation papers are a welcome addition to the volume.
The 43 articles in this interesting collection have been selected from the regular Historical Metallurgy contributions to the Bulletin of Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
Canadian Milling Practice is the fourth in a series of special volumes published by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) since 1957. Like its predecessors, the book is composed of submissions from metallurgists describing technical aspects of Canadian or Canadian company-owned mineral processing operations. These aspects include deposit geology and ore mineralogy, processing flowsheets, equipment types and specifications, key performance indicators, tailings management and processing costs. Mineral processing operations are detailed for commodities such as precious metals, iron ores, base metals, diamonds and industrial minerals. The book also presents Canadian laboratories providing services and conducting research for the mineral processing industry, as well as Canadian universities offering programs in the field of mineral processing.

The Golden Anniversary of the Conference of Metallurgists

This book commemorating the 50th Annual Conference of Metallurgists of the Metallurgy and Materials Society of CIM (MetSoc) was compiled to document how the “metallurgical landscape” in Canada has evolved over the 50-year period from the early 1960s, when in 1962, the first Conference of Metallurgists was held, up to the present day. This retrospective also provides us with an opportunity to look forward, hence some ideas on forces likely to shape the future are also included in this volume; a summary of the results of an informal survey of MetSoc members is also included.
The inspiration for this book came from Professor Ed Asselin and the desire to disseminate expert knowledge and insights from experienced professionals in the field of copper hydrometallurgy. Examples of recognizing and effectively meeting challenges and applying established and front-line knowledge and practical insights are provided in this book. The hope is that practitioners in the field will find the material in this book to be practically useful. If the reader could sit down with the authors of this book and "talk shop", this is the kind of material that would likely inform those conversations.
This volume contains the Proceedings of the International Symposium on Green Technologies for the Metallurgical Industries organized by the Environmental Technical Section of the Metallurgical Society (MetSoc) of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) held in conjunction with the Conference of Metallurgists Meeting held in Sudbury, Ontario August 23-26, 2009 at the campus of Laurentian University.
The 2009 International Symposium of the Hydrometallurgy of Nickel and Cobalt and Valuable Byproduct Containing Materials is organized by members of the Hydrometallurgy section of the Metallurgical Society of CIM as well as representatives from the Australian Hydrometallurgical Community.

In a context where fossil fuel consumption and the emissions associated with it is a major global problem, it is highly relevant to consider the use of lightweight materials like aluminium, magnesium and titanium in a variety of end products, especially in the field of transport. It is therefore important to conduct advanced research on these materials, from production, to processing, to design of finished products, taking into account the material involved (Design for X).
This proceedings volume contains articles concerning research fields that are both fundamental and practical, and that are written by researchers from academia, government and private companies. The volume contains articles from Canada, but also from countries as diverse as Saudi Arabia, the United States, France, India, Italy, Norway, New Zealand and Turkey.
At the 47th Conference of Metallurgists held in Winnipeg, Canada in October 2008, the Iron and Steel Section and the Materials Science and Engineering Section of the Metallurgical Society of CIM organized symposiums on Recent Developments on Advanced High Strength Steels Processing and Structural Alloys for Lightweight Vehicles, respectively. The organization of the present Materials Development and Performance of Sulphur Capture Plants Symposium was intended in part to provide a forum for continuing networking on materials development and processing research.
While a great deal of literature on project and construction management exists, as do many reference books on the fundamentals of metallurgy and engineering principles, very little information is available on the design process, which translates these fundamentals into the design of a properly functioning metallurgical facility. This book fills the information gap.

International standards for the reporting of Mineral Resources, Mineral
Reserves and Exploration Results have been developing at a rapid pace for
the past twenty years due to the globalization of the mining industry.
Standards for the valuation of Mineral Properties have followed a similar
course. This volume contains the current Canadian Reporting Standards for
Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves. These are the Canadian Institute of
Mining Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Definition Standards for Mineral
Resources and Mineral Reserves, the Canadian stock exchange requirements
for disclosure on mineral properties, the CIM Best Practices, and papers
describing industry practice. Canadian Valuation Standards, stock exchange
requirements, and papers describing industry best practice form the second
portion of the volume. Current international reporting standards for mineral
resources and reserves and valuation of mineral properties have also been
included in the respective section.

The North American Mine Ventilation Symposium is organized and led by a coalition of 4 leading partners. Since the first Symposium in 1982, the Underground Ventilation Committee (UVC) has sought to provide mine ventilation engineers and technicians in the underground coal, metal, and industrial mineral mining industry with the latest information and operating practices from the field and promote the exchange of ideas and research in a variety of related areas to include the monitoring of air contaminants, determining fresh air requirements, and producing power efficient ventilation and cooling systems and energy-related topics.
CIM’s Special Volume 57 is the third volume in a series of books dedicated to porphyry deposits of the northwestern Cordillera and is timely, given the increased levels of exploration for precious and base metals seen throughout western British Columbia, southwest Yukon and southern Alaska over the past number of years. With the increasing importance of copper in the sustainable future of global society, this volume presents a series of papers focused on porphyry deposits, the major source of this green metal globally, structured into two sections.

The well-attended 2019 Annual Conference of Metallurgists hosted the 10th edition of the International Copper Conference Series, and the event was co-organized by MetSoc and 7 other international societies which ensured an incredibly global presence.
COM + Copper 2019 attracted more than 1,000 attendees, featured 311 oral presentations within nine symposia, and 55 posters.

The International Symposium on Process Control Applications in Mining and Metallurgical Plants constitutes one of the key symposiums in the 48th Annual Conference of Metallurgists (COM). With a large number of publications on the theoretical development of process control every year, the advancement of process control in industrial practice to help promote economic and sustainable production is also rapidly growing. To reflect this trend, this symposium includes a wide range of exciting topics on process control in mining and metallurgical plants, including expert systems, model based control technology, simulation and monitoring and optimization
The 2009 International Symposium on the Pyrometallurgy of Nickel and Cobalt is organized by members of the Nonferrous Pyrometallurgy Section of the Metallurgical Society of CIM. The organizers appreciate the support and help from Vale Inco, Queens University, University of Toronto and Hatch Associates.
The Clean Processing Symposium is organized by the Non-Ferrous Pyrometallurgy Section of the Metallurgical Society of CIM as part of COM 2012. Although the main focus of the section is to promote and support the activities of professionals in the field of pyrometallurgy, we recognize the importance of technical developments in other fields of extractive metallurgy as complementary to the overall goal of sustainability in our industry. Developments in pyrometallurgy have undergone resurgence over the past few years as we are driven to meet the standards set by alternative processes and as our industry gains a better understanding of the challenges presented by those alternatives.
The section is pleased to be able to provide a cross-section of technical developments and commercial applications, illustrating that a coordinated effort will be required to meet future demands for profitable operation in the face of environmental regulations and social expectations. Included in this symposium are papers covering the fields of pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy and mineral processing, for the extraction of metals from aluminum to zinc.
