Quebec Lithium Project

2011

Charles A Taschereau,

Québec Lithium is currently developing the first North American source of Lithium. This metal is increasingly in demand to supply the need of rechargeable batteries, hybrid and electric cars and is an integral part of a new green and sustainable economy. From its world class deposit located between Amos and Val d’Or in Quebec, Québec Lithium is planning to produce annually 20 million kg of battery-grade Lithium Carbonate (20% of the current world production), starting from the end of 2012. The company has completed in late 2010 a bankable feasibility study and is completing detailed engineering and starting to build a $160M processing plant, mine and related infrastructure. The mine will include an opencast mine and a processing plant with a conventional crushing, grinding and flotation, followed by an hydrometallurgical process allowing to produce various lithium compounds. The presentation will cover the specific challenges and rewards of developing a major mine of a rare and little known but essential metal and review the potential for Quebec and Canada to become a major producer in this new developing market.
