Reaching Our Potential

2016

Mr Pierre Lapointe (President & CEO - ArcelorMittal Mining Canada)

There is consensus that the iron ore market will remain at current price levels as the offer exceeds the demand. Only the most nimble iron ore producers who proactively improve their processes will survive on the long run. One of the ways to do so is by mobilizing employees around the Health & Safety and Operational Excellence cultures. Every employee therefore becomes an ambassador, accountable to achieve targets and, to proactively question the status quo. This allows the organization to transform itself more quickly and achieve stretch targets. The company, previously known as Québec Cartier Mining (QCM), is now part of ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel producer. ArcelorMittal’s mining segment is also one of the five largest producers of iron ore in the World. In Québec, ArcelorMittal Mining Canada G.P. operates mines and a concentrator in Mont-Wright, close to Fermont, and a pelletizing plant, in Port-Cartier. Its sister company, ArcelorMittal Infrastructure Canada G.P., manages the railway linking both operational sites and operates the port facilities in Port-Cartier. This presentation will provide an overview of AMEM’s focus on continuous improvement, leadership and human behaviors.
