The Lighting Evolution – A Bright Future for Safety, Efficiency and Control

2010

Lighting technology has evolved dramatically over the past 30 years. From the introduction of the High Intensity Discharge (HID) arc lamp, to the oil embargo driven push for energy efficiency in the 1970s, the European driven push to high efficiency fluorescent systems characterized by the “T8” and “T5” lamps and the electronic ballast to LED there has almost never been a dull moment in lighting over the past 30 years. The development of LED – thought of as an upstart and a “not-quite-ready for primetime” entry – has been driven to performance levels which none thought could be attained in a very short time. Driven by huge research dollars the LED “evolution-revolution” is delivering lighting systems to the marketplace that developers of the conventional technologies can now only dream of. Bill Charbonneau, a 30+ year veteran of the lighting industry will discuss where the technology has been, where it is now and what the possibilities seem to be for application and control none could have conceived eve just a few short years ago. You will learn of the promise that this lighting technology holds for mining applications is significant in the critical areas of safety, efficiency and control.
