A glance at first encounters between communities and mining

2010

First encounters set the tone of the relationship for the following years. These involve two primary actors, company and community, who form their connections on the basis of perceptions and engage in a process that involves steps back and steps forward, moving from encounters to mix-ups at personal and institutional levels. This situation is the product of an encounter between cultures that look at the world in different ways, which try to manage the other’s expectations on the basis of their own expectations and of community relations processes that offer something that does not yet exist to people who do not necessarily want it. We propose the use of basic principles of communication in terms on values as the stepping stone for successful encounters
