A GOLD MINE OF OPPORTUNITY: ABORIGINAL READINESS STRATEGY

2014

We will present the strategy developed to inform, assess, train, recruit, mentor and monitor Aboriginal workers in the mining industry. The strategy includes reporting and communication services developed to assist our client in their communications with aboriginal rights holders. We will outline the development of a strong and coordinated Aboriginal training and readiness plan that was developed to bridge the gap between Aboriginal education and skills levels and Project labour needs. This plan is part of a broader training program, which has been customized to suit the needs of the construction and operation of the processing plant. Tools and technologies were developed to enhance the training program, such as operator training simulators, e-learning and multimedia techniques. These tools helped to significantly accelerate knowledge transfer and retention. Developing Aboriginal human capital has to come with the enhancement of Aboriginal assets within and outside Aboriginal communities. This is why, in addition to the training plan, an aboriginal inclusion strategy was also developed which addressed: • pre-employment • awareness • mentorship and coaching • monitoring • communication and relationships In addition to describing the training and inclusion programs, the presentation will also outline implementation activities, which are currently being undertaken, including program funding.
