COATES, Chairman, Canadian Advisory Committee on Rock Mechanics; and Head, Mines Branch Mining Research Centre, Ottawa.

The Sub-Committee on Rock Classification, Canadian Advisory Committee on Rock Mechanics, has evolved a classification of rocks which should prove useful in studies of rock mechanics. Considered in two stages - actual rock substance and rock mass - the five-point classification involves the geological name of the rock, the rock strength and rock deformation, and, in the second stage, the gross homogeneity of the rock mass and the formation continuity.
