With the advent of battery powered mining equipment, the underground power distribution designs will need to adapt to new power requirements. The implementation of a battery fleet is mostly being considered in ultra-deep mining projects. These projects typically include a cooling plant, battery chargers, winze hoist, significant dewatering while all being located at great distances from the surface substation. The power system needs to have copious amounts of power available. A solution that is garnering great interest is the use of higher voltages such as 27.6kV for underground distribution. While working on a feasibility level design, BESTECH has had the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge in the multiple advantages and drawbacks that such operating voltage possess. That will be shared as part of this presentation.
