New developments in coal research are being studied by coal producers, utility companies, oil majors and by government agencies. The trend is toward a more diversified use of coal. This paper mentions the exploration and outlining of coal deposits, and discusses mechanization, ground control methods and transportation, including paste slug pipelining. Research into the preparation and combustion of coal is reviewed, and methods of producing coke, an important topic because of the more stringent requirements of the steel industry, are covered. The paper concludes by mentioning some of t he conferences and committees recently set up to study coal in Canada.
