Conveyor fires in Canadian hardrock mines: experience with protective devices at Inco Limited

This paper addresses the occurrence and indicated causes of conveyor fires in North American and European underground mines. Some significant conveyor fires which have been experienced in recent years in Canadian hardrock mines are then reviewed. The nature of existing conveyor monitoring technology is considered in the context of such fire hazards. Experiences with new monitoring technology recently installed at several conveyor sites at Inco Ltd. mines are then reviewed.
