Hydrostatic pressure resisting steel liners for Mine shaft Rehabilitation Projects

2019

Suresh Sivanantham, Cementation Canada Inc.

Hydrostatic pressure resisting steel liners have been installed with success in the recent past in a number of mine-shaft rehabilitation projects. These installations help extend the life of any ageing mine infrastructure and provide for an improved and safe underground mine access. The performance and cost benefits gained from rehabilitating an existing shaft, despite the reduction in the internal shaft space, could outweigh that gained from sinking a new shaft altogether. In this presentation, a method of designing stiffened thin shell liner systems is presented. Methods of analyses including elastic and inelastic conditions are discussed. Recommended practices for fabrication, installation and maintenance are presented.
