LEX LUDY, Vice-President of Technology Ireco Chemicals Ltd., Salt Lake City, Utah

External-detonation-generated plasmas, highly ionized zones of reacting material ejected from the surface of detonating explosive charges, are shown to be the cause of channel desensitization, i.e., the self-quenching of a detonating explosive column loaded in a borehole with an air annulus between the explosive and the borehole wall.
