Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd. (HBM&S) started up a zinc plant and smelter in late 1930, employing technology of that period(1). The zinc plant has since converted from a roast/leach operation to a two stage pressure leach operation to eliminate sulphur dioxide emissions(2). The smelter, however, is still continuing with much of the original roaster/reverberatory furnace technology. This paper reviews the process flow of the copper smelter, with some comments on past and recent changes.
