An overview of the status of the development and application of Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power generation is presented. Current projects in North America, Europe and Japan are described, together with the status of plans to apply the technology in Canada. A brief review of the technology is presented, including promising coproduction cycles and hybrid gasification-pressurized fluid bed processes. The ability of the process to be modified for CO2 to be extracted for enhanced oil recovery or disposal is addressed. The environmental impact of IGCC technology is compared to those of other power generation technologies.
