Rock Bolting

CIM Bulletin, 1955

THE PURPOSE of this paper is to introduce the reader to rock bolting and its present application in mining. Rock bolting consists of bolting insecure rock to secure rock in order to form a safe structure. The insecure rock may be a weak 'bearn or loose from arching or from sloughing. The material is str-engthened and held in place before damage can result. Little is known of the limitations of rock bol ting; to date, work has been carried on by trial-and-error, with large safety factors being used. Rock bolts have been principally used for roof support. Bolting offers a new fi eld of support to the mining industry: it now has a p er manent position as a ground control method
