.Different individuals have calculated the boundary stresses around elliptical openings in an infinite elastic medium for various conditions of loading. With caution, such calculations are useful in indicating stress trends in mining. This paper illustrates an application to caving operations and suggests that abnormal field stress would have an adverse effect.
