With the ever-increasing flood of new science and technology has come a new approach to design. The combination of these factors has produced an ever-accelerating pace of materials substitutions. Examples to illustrate the points made above will be given. An overview of the current new materials fields will follow. Finally, the particular nature of the challenge for Canada will be discussed.
