One key to maintaining successful mining operations in today's global economy is having the ability to access real-time machine data. However, knowledge of machine status is only the first step in controlling and optimizing mining equipment. Computer based diagnostic systems have provided a link for collecting data and trouble-shooting problems, but those systems stopped short of providing full drive systems access. A technician could see the data couldn't make adjustments or repairs unless on the machine. The key then to reducing down-time and maximizing productivity was in creating a system that could not only monitor drive systems but also provide remote access to those systems. One such system now exists … AccessDirect. Created by Siemens Energy and Automation as SiRAS, AccessDirect has been adapted to Bucyrus machines as a result of a joint effort between Bucyrus and Siemens engineering teams. AccessDirect allows a technician to gain access to a machine's drive system from anywhere in the world. This is true systems access in that the technician can make drive system adjustments or in some cases system repairs remotely. The first of a number of AccessDirect systems is currently in use at Boliden's remote Aitik Mine in Sweden.
