The Pavoncelli tunnel case study

2009

Giovanni Barla, Andrea Perino,

The paper deals with the seismic response of the Pavoncelli tunnel which underwent very severe damages during the 23 November 1980 Irpino-Lucano earthquake, in Italy. The tunnel was excavated in very difficult conditions between 1904 and 1915, with a significant length through clay-shales which are known to exhibit a swelling behaviour. A back analysis of the tunnel response is presented based on numerical modelling in both static and dynamic conditions. The results obtained are shown to be of great relevance in view of the design of a new by-pass tunnel to be excavated nearly parallel to the existing one.
