Training operators – a diligent responsibility

2008

Accountability for profit realized or lost, and responsibility for continued safe operation are the main impetus behind operator training. Efficiency in operation enables production at lower unit costs. An inefficient operation eats profitability of the operation, creating short term losses, and also affecting longer term viability particularly when commodity prices fluctuate and competition erodes market share. Safe operation and efficient operation are ultimately conjoined entities which may not be able to be sustained without dual effort. Training is a very valuable tool to engage operations in adopting more efficient and safe practices. Training requires time, facilities and trainers. One novel way of minimizing both the trainers and the facilities is through the use of Computer Based systems. Included amongst this are Computer based equipment simulators, following an identical philosophy as flight simulators used for pilot orientation and training for different aircraft types. One other aspect of Computer Based Systems is Computerized Based Training (CBT) modules which depict actual operations through photographs, explanations and document linkage. Linked documents can include procedures, manuals, forms or drawings. Besides presenting the information in a pace controlled by the employee, there can be written tests for verification of comprehension inserted into the training modules. It is the recording of these test results that are the auditable proof that the organization has fulfilled their diligent responsibility when it comes to proving that training is occurring and has included a significant focus on ensuring that people know how to do their job properly. One of the keys to the success of this training is ensuring that content is valid, current, focused and pertinent. CBT can be for new or existing systems. It can be used for the most complex of systems as well, by breaking the subject matter (title) into chapters and sections as well as using different titles for higher level areas of the system. Tests can be inserted after each of these items to ensure that information is retained in one area before moving to the next. Global tests can be created to ensure that there is retention after the entire subject is completed. A testing program can then be developed to denote the periodicity required for currency of operation. Wardrop offers the experience and the expertise to make CBT or any training program a success. Training is a science that involves connection with the trainees, a knowledge of the mechanics of the training cycle and the ability to deliver the salient message out of the package and into the hearts and minds of the recipients.
