Underhand Cut and Fill Mining As Practiced in Three Deep Hard Rock Mines

This paper describes underhand cut and fill mining methods used at the Lucky Friday, Stillwater and Galena mines in the western United States of America. Underhand mining is used to safely mine in difficult ground conditions and as a primary miming method where access below the ore is limited. Details of the operational aspects of the backfilling and mining cycles at each mine will be presented as well as a summary of the mechanical behavior of the backfill.
