This paper discusses general application for A C variable frequency drives in the mining industry. A review of induction motors characteristics, adjustable frequency controller fundamentals, and three commonly used controllers is presented. General application guidelines for the three different types of controllers; variable voltage input, current source input and pulse width modulated are then reviewed in detail, and an example of the economic benefit of this technology is discussed.
