This paper presents an overview of plant electrical systems in general, a discussion of the problems that may occur due to plant growth, the maintenance required to maintain the reliability and safety of the electrical system, and the selectivity of the relay protection system. It is divided into two main areas: short circuit levels within the plant electrical system; and relay protection systems. This information is directed at maintenance supervisors, mine managers and electrical superintendents who have been away from detailed short circuit and relay coordination calculations for some time. It points out the potential problem areas within an operating plant electrical system.
