The Golden Anniversary of the Conference of Metallurgists

This book commemorating the 50th Annual Conference of Metallurgists of the Metallurgy and Materials Society of CIM (MetSoc) was compiled to document how the “metallurgical landscape” in Canada has evolved over the 50-year period from the early 1960s, when in 1962, the first Conference of Metallurgists was held, up to the present day. This retrospective also provides us with an opportunity to look forward, hence some ideas on forces likely to shape the future are also included in this volume; a summary of the results of an informal survey of MetSoc members is also included.

The World Gold Conference is hosted alternatively by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) and the Southern Africa Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). The conference completed its first cycle with the 2009 Gold Conference in Johannesburg. After 3 successful events, the conference returned to Canada for the 50th Anniversary of the Metallurgy and Materials Society of CIM. According to the World Gold Council, the rise in demand for bars, coins and jewellery increased the global gold demand in the first quarter of 2011 totalling 981.3 tonnes, up 11% year-on-year from 881.0 tonnes in the first quarter of 2010. In value terms, this translated to US$43.7bn, compared with US$31.4bn in the first quarter of 2010, an increase of almost 40%. The gold price exploded in the summer of 2011, reaching $1,850 USD/oz, in August. Many large projects were initiated by mining companies following the constantly increasing price of gold.

In a context where fossil fuel consumption and the emissions associated with it is a major global problem, it is highly relevant to consider the use of lightweight materials like aluminium, magnesium and titanium in a variety of end products, especially in the field of transport. It is therefore important to conduct advanced research on these materials, from production, to processing, to design of finished products, taking into account the material involved (Design for X). This proceedings volume contains articles concerning research fields that are both fundamental and practical, and that are written by researchers from academia, government and private companies. The volume contains articles from Canada, but also from countries as diverse as Saudi Arabia, the United States, France, India, Italy, Norway, New Zealand and Turkey.

This is the sixth in a series of symposia, which started in 1992, on waste processing and recycling in the mineral and metallurgical industry. The symposia have been held in Edmonton, Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Hamilton and now Montréal. They are sponsored by the Environment Section of the Metallurgical Society in collaboration with other interested Sections and held at the annual Conference of Metallurgists. The present one is also co-sponsored by the Minerals, Metals and Material Society (TMS) of the U.S.A., and Mining and Materials Institute of Japan.

International standards for the reporting of Mineral Resources, Mineral Reserves and Exploration Results have been developing at a rapid pace for the past twenty years due to the globalization of the mining industry. Standards for the valuation of Mineral Properties have followed a similar course. This volume contains the current Canadian Reporting Standards for Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves. These are the Canadian Institute of Mining Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Definition Standards for Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves, the Canadian stock exchange requirements for disclosure on mineral properties, the CIM Best Practices, and papers describing industry practice. Canadian Valuation Standards, stock exchange requirements, and papers describing industry best practice form the second portion of the volume. Current international reporting standards for mineral resources and reserves and valuation of mineral properties have also been included in the respective section.

This book traces the changing ways in which research and development occurred in Canada's mining and metallurgy sector from the 1950s to the present day. The study is a collaborative project developed by Ingenium – Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation and the Historical Metallurgy Section of the Metallurgy & Materials Society (MetSoc).

Canadian Milling Practice is the fourth in a series of special volumes published by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) since 1957. Like its predecessors, the book is composed of submissions from metallurgists describing technical aspects of Canadian or Canadian company-owned mineral processing operations. These aspects include deposit geology and ore mineralogy, processing flowsheets, equipment types and specifications, key performance indicators, tailings management and processing costs. Mineral processing operations are detailed for commodities such as precious metals, iron ores, base metals, diamonds and industrial minerals. The book also presents Canadian laboratories providing services and conducting research for the mineral processing industry, as well as Canadian universities offering programs in the field of mineral processing.

The well-attended 2019 Annual Conference of Metallurgists hosted the 10th edition of the International Copper Conference Series, and the event was co-organized by MetSoc and 7 other international societies which ensured an incredibly global presence.

COM + Copper 2019 attracted more than 1,000 attendees, featured 311 oral presentations within nine symposia, and 55 posters.
