Some of the greatest technological successes result from inspired collaboration between scientists and engineers. An excellent example of this has been the development and optimisation of catalytic after treatment technology – to reduce emissions from many types of combustion processes, in particular those from engines. Chemists at Johnson Matthey (JM) were pioneers in the development of this technology, that results in highly efficient and effective emissions control. Since the concepts were established in the 1960s, JM has been at the forefront of technology development, demonstration and deployment. Over the last decade, JM has been working with the mining industry in Canada to develop and demonstrate technology to reduce particulate matter emissions from diesel engines. The collaboration between scientists and engineers has resulted in Johnson Matthey’s mining CRT®. This Continuously Regenerating Trap® takes advantage of an innovative passive cleaning technology to remove trapped soot particles and regenerate filter performance. This technology can be retrofitted to most diesel engines removing up to 99% of particulate matter without increase in NO2 emissions. This has obvious benefits to those working in the vicinity of equipment operating a mining CRT® system. In this paper we will outline how this innovative technology has been adapted to meet the specific needs of the mining sector and illustrate with the latest results from field trials.
