Chuck Steed, Luiz Castro and Will Pitman Golder Associates Ltd. Risk assessment is now commonly used to provide mine operators with an assessment of strategic risk and possible risk reduction measures. Qualitative and/or quantitative assessments can be carried out to identify major hazards, assess the likelihood of occurrence and consequences of each hazard, estimate the level of risk, and identify possible risk reduction measures. Yearly or bi-yearly risk assessment of mine excavations can assist mine operators in prioritizing resources and provide a mechanism for “pro-active” action to reduce potential risk associated with personnel safety, equipment safety and environmental impact. Practical mine applications of risk assessments will be presented to highlight the benefits of these measures.
