Y OU will likely recall the accomplishments of the International Geophysical Year of 1957, with its polar expeditions, the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts and the spectacular launchings of the first a artificial earth satellites . Our knowledge of the exterior of the earth was greatly increased by this international, friendly, cooperative scientific investigation. The Inter national Union of Geodesy and Geophysics has now been joined by the new International Union of Geological Sciences in sponsoring a similar study of the earth 's interior. The program will extend from January, 1962, until December. 1964, and is known as the International Upper : Mantle Project .
