This presentation will profile The Mining Association of Canada’s recent work in engaging Aboriginal governments and communities, through its commitments in Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM). MAC recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to take up the Assembly of First Nation’s Corporate Challenge, incorporating the AFN’s four pillars of partnerships, investment, procurement and employment. As a means of regional engagement, MAC has recently initiated an Aboriginal-Mining Forum in the north, designed to strengthen relationships between the northern minerals industry and Aboriginal governments and organizations in the NWT, with the ultimate goal of achieving long-term sustainability of communities with mining as a key element of economic security.
