Nemaska Lithium’s Whabouchi project will first involves the development of a spodumene deposit located 30 km east of the Cree community of Nemaska and 300 km northwest of Chibougamau, QC. Then, from the mine site, a spodumene concentrate will be sent to a processing plant located in Shawinigan, QC , where lithium compounds will be produced.
As part of project development, Nemaska Lithium has accounted for concerns expressed by the Cree Nation of Nemaska and by Jamesians based in Chibougamau-Chapais, thus enabling the optimization of the project. Such approach led to the adoption of significant changes to project design (tailings and water management, extraction mode, etc.) In all cases, not only do these changes increased social and environmental acceptability of the project, but they also improved its technical and economic feasibility.
The demand for the lithium compounds Nemaska Lithium intends to produce being dependent on the energy storage and electric cars market, the Whabouchi Project has to be respectful of the environment and communities so that it will one day be possible to produce in Quebec electric cars that are “green” from the mine to our roads.
